Band Parent Organization

Parents,

As your students are preparing for their placement audition on Tuesday at Milton High School, I would like to meet with any parents that are interested in a leadership position with the Cambridge Band Boosters. We will need parents skilled in marketing and sales to spearhead some fundraising efforts, some legal experience to assist with tax documents and legal organization, and accounting skills to formulate and manage budgets. While these are specific requests, ANY parents with the interest and desire to assist leading this organization are encouraged to attend.

We will meet in the Community Room at HUDSON GRILLE (Hwy 9 across from Lowes) THURSDAY, MARCH 29 at 7:30 PM. If you are able to attend please RSVP to cambridgehsbd@gmail.com - and if you are interested in serving the boosters leadership and are unable to attend please share that in an email as well.

GOOD LUCK to your students in their auditions - I hope to see many of you Tuesday and Thursday.

Audition Questions

Parents and Students,

In less than two weeks the first major student event in the band program at Cambridge High School will take place. All students interested in participating in the band at Cambridge will need to complete an audition at Milton High School on Tuesday, March 27th. The auditions are PLACEMENT auditions - ALL students that audition will be in the band program at Cambridge High School. It is the intention to have a select auditioned ensemble and additional concert ensembles at Cambridge. All middle school directors and Mr. Walsh at Alpharetta have the audition materials and information - please don't hesitate to ask them for it or email me directly at borger@fultonschools.org.

Immediately after the auditions, I will be placing students in the appropriate ensemble. It is critical that students also be registered for the correct school at this time. I am aware several students are still resolving the issues of attending Cambridge or Milton/Alpharetta. It will be impossible to set the ensembles properly if students are still deciding after the audition date. I have made every effort to be impartial and listen to concerns - I will continue to do this for any students and parents that have questions, but it will make the scheduling process for all high schools much more accurate if the registration information is in the computer before the auditions on March 27th.

Thanks for your assistance with this first timeline issue.

I am eagerly anticipating the announcement of the Cambridge Orchestra and Chorus Directors next Wednesday!

I hope to see many of you at the Gala Saturday, and golf outing on Monday!! GO BEARS!!

Cambridge Fight Song!

Announcing the melody for the Cambridge High School Fight Song . . . "The Victors" from the University of Michigan! For some history check out the Wikipedia article on "The Victors," - John Philip Sousa is quoted as saying "The Victors is the greatest college fight song ever written.".

Now it's your chance to contribute to the new traditions of Cambridge High School! We need our own original and exciting lyrics to the CAMBRIDGE FIGHT SONG and you can share your own ideas. Please send any submissions to the following email address - cambridgehsbd@gmail.com - and updates will be posted on this blog. Only appropriate and serious submissions will be considered and all must include the name of the student submitting the lyrics. For a helpful YouTube video of the music and lyrics follow this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mURDwg_wilE&feature=youtube_gdata_player. You can also download the victors on iTunes - but make sure it is "The Victors" and not "Hail to the Victors," they are completely different songs.

Continue to check the blog often for several more updates including audition information, uniform design, and staff announcements. Hope to see many Cambridge Band Families at the Gala on March 17th and/or the Golf Outing on March 19th.

Frequently Asked Questions

In the past few days I have been asked some similar questions. I thought it would be smart to use this forum to address some of those recurring questions. As always, if you have a specific question please email me at borger@fultonschools.org.

1) Will there be a marching band at Cambridge High School the first year?
Yes - the marching band will perform for all VARSITY FOOTBALL the first year at Cambridge. In addition to establishing the traditions of fight songs, alma mater, and Friday festivities, the marching band will also prepare a contest show the first year. The marching band will attend a band camp and have a detailed summer rehearsal schedule in order to provide a quality product the day the school opens. Follow the link to the Cambridge Band Calendar in the header of this blog.

2) What will the audition process involve for Cambridge High School Bands?
This year all auditions will be conducted at Milton High School on Tuesday, March 27th. The auditions will consist of all 12 major scales, GMEA Middle School All-State audition prepared étude, and sight reading. The auditions are judged blind by some of the most talented musicians in Metro-Atlanta.

3) What will band classes be like the first year?
This is perhaps the most challenging question to answer due to the question of enrollment. Intentions are to have an auditioned ensemble (Cambridge Wind Symphony) that will prepare quality high school literature and present several concerts throughout the school year - also featured with other fine ensembles in the Cambridge Performing Arts. Additional instructional courses will be provided as the enrollment dictates in an effort to enhance the quality of instructional time in every discipline; such as woodwind, brass, and percussion courses. This question will be better answered after auditions and scheduling are completed.

4) Do I have to audition for marching band?
No - all students that are in a band class can be in marching band. Attendance at band camp is extremely important. Percussion students will be evaluated in the beginning of the summer for the best placement and responsibilities for the marching season. ALL STUDENTS registered for band that want to perform with the marching band are welcome and encouraged to join the marching band.

Thanks for taking the time to check in to the Cambridge Bands Blog. I have attached a link to a new study in regard to intelligence and an arts education - please note the reference to marching band as well. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/07/20/music-intelligence_n_904124.html

Please check the blog in the near future for exciting announcements regarding marching band staff, fight song, and uniform designs. Feel free to share the link with friends - and continue to email additional questions and concerns to me any time.

Welcome to Cambridge Bands!

I am truly excited to begin the process of building a band program and offering exciting opportunities throughout the fine arts department at Cambridge High School.

I have three very simple expectations for students:

1. EXPECT TO BE GOOD PEOPLE

2. EXPECT TO BE PURPOSEFUL STUDENTS AND MUSICIANS

3. EXPECT TO HAVE A GREAT TIME MAKING MUSIC WITH FRIENDS
